Interview Mr. Chen

(Chen Hai-hong)Q: could you tell us the value of Four-tile Dance?
A: Four-Tile Dance is part of folk culture in Huangjiazhai Town, Datong County of Qinghai Province. Its value mainly reflects in two aspects. The first is long history. It is the living fossil of traditional folk culture. Secondly, the sense of Four-Tile Dance is people’s gratitude to the god, which is inductive to the construction of our harmonious society.

(Sun Cui)Q: could you tell us the distinction between tangible and intangible cultural heritage?

A: well, in Four-Tile Dance, the intangible cultural heritage refers to its meaning and implication; while the tangible cultural heritage refers to the costume and tool. The two aspects can’t be separated.

(Cai Sheng-bo)Q: most people are not familiar with Four-Tile Dance, what’s your opinion?
A: the Four-Tile Dance is facing serious attack. There are few young people to take over, while the senior artists are too old. It’s on the verge of extinction. We should train the successors. The successors can be divided into two groups: excellent and ordinary ones. The former ones should master the cultural essence of this folk art. The latter ones just need to know a little about it.
