West China Story
Selection I

The West China Story Project is to encourage students to observe customs in their hometown and interview local people in spare time, and then make these stories into web pages.

After implementation for more than one year, more than 7000 stories and 30,000 pictures are made into webpages, published on “westchianstory” platform. Though it seems to be a little drop in the sea, it also reflects the beauty of sunshine. In each region of the world, children have the same innocence and desire to learn. It’s their natural right.

At the beginning of 2008, we edit some children’s work. Although their work can’t be compared to novel or excellent photos, their heart-making web pages is certain to draw people’s attention to their life.

School and life

(In 2007, 20 students in Xi'datan Middle School participated in West China Story Project. Since Apr 12 of 2007, as many as 110 stories and 463 photos are published on "westchianstory" website. All the web pages are made by the students themselves with the instruction of tutors named Pu Cheng and Cheng Yun in their spare time.)

In children's eyes, their school is like this(maybe there are errors in their essays)

At the foot of Mount Qilian, there is a town called Xi’datan. It used to be cold. In winter, you can see snow-capped mountain; in summer and autumn, the mountain is covered with green trees. The forest cover rate amounts to 80%. The air is fresh and the river is clean. It’s a beautiful place. ( By Mao Hong-zu)

Xi'datan Middle School was founded in 1956, which has a history of 51 years. There are 420 students and 26 teachers in our school. As a rural school, the number of students amounts to nine primary schools. Though there is no tall building in campus, the red-brisk bungalow looks so beautiful. This is a large family and we are family members. ( By Yang Ling)

There are three grades and eight classes in our school. In grade seven, there are more than 180 students. In grade eight, there are three classes, and each contains 50 odd students. In grade nine, there are two classes, and each contains 40 odd students. We have eight classrooms in campus. In the classroom, there are dozens of desks and chairs, a lecture platform and a blackboard. Though it looks simple, it becomes beautiful after teachers and students’ decoration.

There are 21 dormitories in school, in which 12 for boys and 9 for girls. The girls in grade seven and eight have a dormitory for each class. There are three dormitories for girls in Grade Nine. Each dormitory is crowded and thus we have to live up and down. The quilts and bed sheets are taken from home. There is a stove in each room. But it is still cold in winter. Though the condition is poor, we determine to hold the line. Everyone knows that "no pain,no gains"

In a cold winter morning, many students have got up early and study in the classroom. By the light of candle, students begin reading books. Maybe the books are so attractive, they forget about the cold weather.
