Uncle Zhou Banghui is a shadow
artist
in Dongliu Village, Huang Town. When
we went to interview him,
he
just
went
out for
show.
So
we heard his story from the
villages.
When he was
17 years old,
he learnt from
the
old folk artist Jin
Shengchang
in
Datong County
to
start
his
shadow study and practice. Every morning, he
sang and recited lines. He learned to polish, carve, paint and
decorate leather on the desk during the day. And he studied in
the
evening.
He performed
with
his teacher
outside.
Sometimes
that
was
a couple of weeks.
He also rushed for all
the
chores.
Because of
childhood obsession of shadow play
and
hard work and practice,
he became
the
leading role
in the
theatrical troupe
quickly. |
