In 1972, Zhang Lixue was a teacher in Taole County Hongyazi Wangjiagou Primary school . At that time teacher is versatility. Besides Chinese, mathematics, they had to teach other subjects, such as art. At that time
he found art characters from Ningxia Daily to teach children. He also found some paper cut on the newspaper. He thought them very beautiful and collected them. As time went on, his collection became more and more. He began to think over how to cut and sometimes he tried to cut, and taught the cutting methods to his students.

After several setbacks, Zhang Lixue became a village administrator. During this period, he seldom cut by himself. When coming to farmers' home, he taught basic knowledge of paper cut to the children. And then he became the director of culture organization. Although his work is changing, the time h spent on cutting is reducing. He still like to collect paper cut on news papers.

In 2002, he was required to edit county system with his colleagues. He led them working on collecting, trimming day and night. But for the lack of capital, their book could not be published. Under the leader & cadre system at that time, he was dismissed to home and began to be a farmer. He worked together with his wife on their farms and fostered 5 children. At the time when he had forgot the chill from his work, two of his children fell ill continually. For not getting cure in time, one child passed away. This is a giant blow to his spirit. He devoted himself to paper cut to lessening this pain and immersed in the art ocean. Paper cut comforted him. When seeing his works, he felt cosy. Wonderful life comes out of cutting
For Zhang Lixue often do agriculture work, and is familiar with country life, he treats these animated characters as headspring of his creation.
Before National Day of 2004, Pingluo county was going to hold a farmer painting and calligraphy exhibition to celebrate its 280-year county establishment. When receiving the notice from county culture organization, he created a “Yangbian Cuima Songliangma” and handed on. This work was appraised as first. From 2005 to 2007, he was honored with “excellent artist” three times.
In 2005 county culture organization handed on his “ Mai Zhi Gongyang Songhuijia” to The Third Culture Professional Skills Competition” held by The Propagandize Ministry of Ningxia Hui Nationality Autonomous Region and Culture Hall of Ningxia Hui Nationality Autonomous Region. He got honorable mention. He found his shortcomings through this competition, and made greater efforts on paper cut. Sometimes, he even cut day and night. In 2006, his works were published on Ningxia Daily, News Paper, Western Morning Edition.
In 2006, his “Sange Daibiao Nuan Renxin” was packed up by The Second International Paper-cut Art Festival. The experts gave his works high evaluation. In September 2006, The Sixth (Weilong) China Century Collect Songs gave first prize to him for his work of “Jiuniu Tu” and he is the only participator from Ningxia to gt first prize.
In 2007 Third China Great Harmony international Paper cut Art Festival, his thesis on paper cutting “Sky, Wild Flower, and Village Earth Affection” was honored with honorable thesis prize. He communicated with many paper cut artists and improved each other. “Western Morning Edition, China Style, Glamour China , all reported him. In April 2007, he was invited to be senior artist and honor director of China International Artist Association, and was honored with China prominent cultural person. China Art Folk Art Comprehensive Book” awarded him as Paper-Cut Artist.
In 2007 September, the seventh (Chenfang) China Century Collect Folk Songs, his innovative dyeing paper cut “new type farmer” got first prize again. And “Life Tree” of his wife got second prize. He smiled happily when they standing on the
Great Hall of the People together.
