The
systems of learning of different sects are almost the same in
different monasteries. If a lama wants to enter a monastery to
study the scriptures, he must first study in the preparatory class
of the Open School and then enter the formal class in different
grades. If he finishes studying all the scriptures, he is qualified
to participate in the examination for the title of Gebshes (the
Buddhist equivalent of doctor of divinity). One may obtain different
Gebshes titles by passing different examinations. After obtaining
a Gebshes title, one
may enter the Secret School, where, after choosing a master, one
passes through a ceremony named "vessel consecration."
Usually, the master pours water from a pot or vase onto the head
of the disciple, and then offers him wine from a bowl made of
a skull to warn him to clear his mind of all evil thoughts. After
this ceremony, the master starts to teach the disciple the scriptures.
The disciple will undergo the ceremony of "vessel consecration"
every time he moves to a higher level of the Secret School. Students
receive instruction four times a day, sitting on a seat paved
with sharp pebbles until he obtains the title of Living Buddha.
Ranjianba title is the lowest-level title in Ta’er Lamasery. To
obtain this title the monk has to spend 10 years studying many
Buddhist theories and sutras. And after a Buddhist debate, those
gaining better grades can be granted Ranjianba title by the chief.
It is equivalent to graduation of secondary school.
Geranba title is equivalent to degree of college. After gaining
the title, the monk is no longer required to attend the daily
reading sutra activity and can study Buddhism in his own place
preparing for the higher title.
Linsai Gebshe is gained after the Buddhist debate attended by
all the monks and equivalent to postgraduate degree.
Oranba Gebshe is the highest degree in Mizong School. The monk
has to spend 3 to 10 years studying Tsongkhapa’s works. And after
a Buddhist debate, the chief will grand a the title to the winner.
The title is only granted to one monk each year.
Manranba Gebshe is the medical doctor and the highest degree in
Yiming medical school. To gain the degree, the monk must take
part in the competitive examination about Tibetan medical works.
The chief will grand the degree to those who get the excellent
grades.
Zeranba Gebshe is the astrology doctor. To gain the title, the
monk should be the master of chronometry, Tibetan chronology,
gradus, astromancy, etc. It is the highest degree in Shilun School.
Laranba Gebshe is the doctor degree gained in the Buddhist debate
attended by monks of the Gandain Monastery, Zhaibung Monastery
and Sera Monastery. The monk who wants to obtain this title must
study for more than 10 years even tens of years. After getting
Geranba Gebshe, the chiefs of Ta’er Lamasery strived for around
ten years to get this title. Currently, only Quexi Luosanghuadan,
a living Buddha in Ta’er Lamasery has gained the title since 1957
when he had further study in Lhasa.
