Though Yan stayed abroad for more than 30 years, he missed China very much. In his book, he said that in his Home Pagetown, Bazhong of Sichuan Province, his parents were buried and his memory of childhood was left. In midnight, he always missed the local songs, duck, fish and etc. even his oral English was combined with Sichuan dialect.

| In 1985, during a time of reform or "warmer" winds in China, Yan, a wizened 92-year old, was invited to come to Beijing. Ms. Deng Yingchao praised him as he made great contribution to national and worldwide popular education. During his three-day stay at Dingxian, he found that his house, where his life work had begun and where he and his wife had brought up their five children, had been converted into a museum with an exhibition of his work in China and around the world. He was surprised to witness the great changes in rural construction in China. |

In 1987, Yan visited his Home Pagetown for the second time, when he expressed his idea to do something for China in his last years. Together with Chongqing Academy of Social Sciences, Yan drew up the plan of “Setting up Chinese Rural Construction Center”. In Beijing, Yan was selected as honorary president of alumni association and delivered a speech concerning of his strong determination of devoting his knowledge to the motherland.
In Yan’s works, the famous ones are “The Collected Works of Yan Yangchu”, “The Volume of Yan Yangchu ”, “The Study of Yan Yangchu’s Popular Eduation Thoughts”, “The Conception of Popular Education”, “The True Sense of Popular Education”, “The Mission of Rural Movements” and etc. In Bazhong City, there is a museum about Yan’s biology and a study center of Yan has been set up. |
