                             In the early 20th century, most  people in China  were lack of knowledge, even illiterate. In their opinion, reading books had no  relationship with ordinary people. As much as 80% of Chinese were illiterate.  Yan determined to carry out literature and art education to cure people’s  ignorance. Yan and his colleges compiled more than 600 fold reading materials,  including folk songs, stories, jokes, idioms, music book, drawing book and etc.  they also organized folk song competition, drama performing and other kinds of  art activities.
